August Sander - People of the 20th Century August Sander's project People of the 20th Century is a foundational body of work in the history of both conceptual art as well as photography. August Sander’s Magnum Opus represents a deep look at the structure and groupings of the German society during the first half of the 20th Century. Sander’s groupings present a pertinent mirror for the current social discourse around the topics of identity and belonging. The curation of this presentation presents Sander’s groupings as a spiral that starts with the Framer and spirals around eventually ending with the tribute to his son Erich which also closes out the project. Through the spiral the groups retain their unity yet are forced to engage with members of other groups, some of which has no apparent commonality. We are both part of the group we identify with, as well as part of other groups by circumstance, chance, or fate. It is the first time that the complete set will be shown in Europe.
