The Monitor gallery was founded in October 2003 by Paola Capata. From the beginning of the project, the gallery has focused on emerging international artists, aiming to provide an experimental space that allows them to approach the idea of an exhibition in new ways, engaging with various artistic practices from sculpture to installation, with a core emphasis on video and film. Some of these artists are now internationally recognized as mid-career artists. Among them are Nathaniel Mellors (Doncaster, UK, 1974), Laurent Montaron (Verneuil-sur-Avre, FR, 1978), Alexander Singh (Bordeaux, FR, 1980), and Guido van der Werve (Papendrecht, NL, 1977), who was honored with a major solo exhibition at Future Dome in Milan. From January 2014 for a year, Monitor opened a project space in downtown Manhattan, New York, concluding in August 2015 with a residency and solo show by the Italian artist Tomaso De Luca (Verona, 1988), who is now a finalist for the Bulgari Maxxi Prize and a selected artist for the Quadriennale in Rome. Monitor supports Italian art by providing its artists with international visibility through collaborations with museums, institutions, curators, and collectors to realize and promote significant projects. It continues to explore figurative painting through the work of artists who offer and reinterpret a personal and contemporary interpretation of the traditional models of 20th-century art. Among these are Italian artists like Thomas Braida (Gorizia, 1982), Nicola Samorì (Forlì, 1977), Matteo Fato (Pescara, 1977), and Oscar Giaconia (Milan, 1978), as well as international artists like Benedikt Hipp (Munich, DE, 1977) and Peter Linde Busk (Copenhagen, DK, 1973), who have exhibited in museum institutions such as Haus Der Kunst in Munich and the Holstebro Kunstmuseum in Denmark. In 2017, Monitor opened a new location in Lisbon, inaugurating it with a solo show by Graham Hudson (Sussex, EN, 1977), winner of The Bryan Robertson Trust Award for 2018. This was followed by solo and group exhibitions showcasing interactions between artists represented by the gallery and Portuguese artists. Sergio Carronha (Cascais, PT, 1984) is the first Portuguese artist to join the gallery's roster. In recent years, Paola Capata, the gallery's founder, has promoted various cross-disciplinary initiatives: Granpalazzo, a new contemporary art fair format founded with Delfo Durante, Ilaria Gianni, and Federica Schiavo, which has reached three editions, and Straperetana, a show dispersed throughout the ancient village of Pereto (AQ), founded with Delfo Durante and curated by Saverio Verini. Straperetana is now in its seventh edition. In March 2023, Monitor Rome inaugurated its new location in the heart of the San Lorenzo district, and in the same year, in May, Monitor Lisbon opened its new location in the Campo de Ourique neighborhood.
